CALL FOR PAPERS
2nd International Workshop on Semantic Media Adaptation and Personalization (SMAP 2007)
December 17-18, 2007, London, United Kingdom
www.smap2007.org
So overwhelming has been the interest and support for the 1st Workshop that the organisers (Brunel University, the University of Indianapolis’ Athens Campus and the National Technical University of Athens) are preparing a 2nd Workshop to be hosted by Brunel University on Monday and Tuesday, December 17 and 18, 2007 at its leafy suburban Uxbridge campus. The campus is situated very close to London Heathrow Airport (the UK’s main airport), Windsor Castle (one of the Queen's official residences), and Uxbridge tube station (from which trains depart every few minutes for central London).
Workshop Topics
It is becoming harder to access, manage and transmit multimedia content according to the meaning it embodies. As text-based search engines give way to content and context aware engines, which not only personalize searching and delivery but also the content format, advanced network infrastructures are emerging capable of end-to-end ubiquitous transmission of multimedia content to any device, fixed or mobile, on any network, wired or wireless, at any time. This has opened new markets for content and service providers who, recognising the value of individual users, are investing in technologies that adapt and personalize content. Industry, in response, has released new standards such as MPEG-7, MPEG21 and VC-1 that enable propagation of semantic media, adaptation and personalization.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
| |
User Modelling |
| |
Semantic Content Creation and Modelling |
| |
Content Adaptation |
| |
Adaptive Content Information Retrieval and Filtering |
| |
Content Middleware |
| |
Content Management |
| |
Content Delivery |
| |
Multimedia Content Communities |
| |
Intelligent Personalized Interfaces |
| |
Personalized and Adaptive E-Learning |
| |
Personal and Ubiquitous Application Development |
| |
Adaptive and Personalized Multimedia Summaries |
| |
Use of open standards: MPEG-7, MPEG-21, VC-1, IEEE P1599 |
| |
Adaptation and Personalization in TV Environments |
| |
Adaptive Hypermedia |
Who Can Participate?
The 2007 Workshop aims not only to bring back together the researchers and practitioners from 2006 but also to welcome new ones in order to explore recent and emerging developments in the field of semantic media adaptation and personalization, building on the achievements of the 2006 Workshop. Specifically, SMAP 2007 will consolidate any 2006 efforts to advance beyond a workshop meeting to a focused meeting of a society of researchers and practitioners. Furthermore, it will host a Doctoral Consortium for PhD candidates specialising in the field.
Doctoral Consortium
The Doctoral Consortium is a special event within SMAP 2007 exclusively for doctoral students. It provides a unique opportunity for doctoral students to explore their research with experienced SMAP researchers and other students. In this way, the Consortium offers participants:
| |
- a forum for receiving valuable feedback on their
current research and guidance for future
progress from international researchers outside
of their own universities,
|
| |
- a supportive and constructive environment, and
|
| |
- the possibility to network with other doctoral
students and established researchers working in
similar areas.
|
Participants will have their papers published in the SMAP 2007 proceedings and will be required to present their work in a single session during the main Workshop (exact date TBC, see overleaf for details of the main Workshop). In addition, a report summarising the contributions of the Doctoral Consortium participants will be made available after the end of the Workshop and will appear in the SMAP 2008 proceedings. All Doctoral Consortium participants will be eligible for a discount on the normal Workshop registration fee.
More info on the Doctoral Consortium can be found here:
SMAP 2007 Doctoral Consortium
Workshop Proceedings
The Workshop proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society and made available through IEEE Xplore™ and the IEEE Computer Society Digital Library. Papers must be formatted according to the IEEE Computer Society standards and their length must be between 4 and 6 IEEE double column style pages. Only IEEE Xplore™-compliant PDF files will be accepted.
Edited Volume
Deserving papers will be solicited for inclusion in an Edited Volume. An Edited Volume of the Springer Series on Studies in Computational Intelligence featuring papers selected from those presented at SMAP 2006 is due for publication later in the year. More information on SMAP 2007 Edited Volume will be available soon.
Journal Special Issue
Exceptional papers will be solicited for inclusion in an international, peer-reviewed journal special issue after extension and re-evaluation. A special issue of the ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems journal featuring papers selected from those presented at SMAP 2006 has been published. A special issue of the Multimedia Tools and Applications journal featuring papers selected from those presented at SMAP 2007, as well as a special issue of the Signal, Image and Video Processing journal, are due to publication later in the year.
Workshop Award
The accolade of Best Paper at SMAP 2007 will be awarded by the General Chairs based on the outcomes of the reviewing process.
